Karnataka grows cotton across both rainfed and irrigated conditions, with the main belt in the northern districts around Dharwad, Haveri, Raichur, Ballari and Kalaburagi.

Sowing time varies by type. Hirsutum hybrids go in between May and 15 July. Herbaceum varieties are sown later, between July and September. Under irrigation, summer cotton is sown in February and March.

The main difference from Maharashtra is the fertiliser dose. Irrigated interspecific hybrids in Karnataka are recommended at 150:75:75 kg per hectare, close to double the rainfed rate. If you are growing an irrigated hybrid and applying a rainfed dose, the crop will run short during boll filling.

Spacing for hybrids in the transitional and heavy rainfall zones is 90 x 60 cm or 90 x 30 cm. In the higher rainfall tracts, leaf spot and blight pressure is higher than in Vidarbha, so the fungicide in the 30 to 45 day spray does more work here.

What mistakes make a cotton spray fail?

Even a correct product at the correct time fails if the application is wrong. The common ones:

• Spraying at midday. Cotton leaves have a waxy surface and the droplet evaporates before it is absorbed. Spray in the early morning or after 4 pm.

• Skipping the spreader. Water beads up and rolls off cotton leaves. A silicon spreader at the recommended dose is the cheapest way to raise the efficiency of everything else in the tank.
