Measures to Control Anthracnose Disease in pomegranate crop

Anthracnose is a widespread fungal disease that affects a large variety of plants, including trees, shrubs, fruits, vegetables, and flowers. It is caused by several different species of fungi in the genus Colletotrichum, although other fungal genera can also cause similar diseases. The most common symptom of anthracnose is the development of dark, sunken lesions on leaves, fruits, and stems. These lesions can be circular or irregular in shape, and they may have a raised border. In some cases, the lesions may ooze a sticky, sap-like substance.

Environmental favorable factors for pests/Diseases:

• Temperature: The fungus responsible for anthracnose, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, thrives in warm temperatures. Studies have shown that the optimal temperature range for its growth and infection is between 25-30°C (77-86°F).
• Humidity: High humidity levels create a moist environment that favors fungal growth and spore germination. Relative humidity above 85% for extended periods can significantly increase the risk of anthracnose infection in pomegranate trees.

 Symptoms of Pest/Disease:

On leaves:

• Small, circular, brown to black spots with yellow halos.
• Lesions may enlarge and merge, causing leaves to turn yellow and drop prematurely.

On fruit:

• Small, sunken, brown or black lesions, usually starting at the calyx (the flower end) of the fruit.
• Lesions may enlarge and become irregular, sometimes with a slightly raised, oily appearance.
• As the disease progresses, the lesions may crack open, exposing the flesh of the fruit to secondary infections and causing spoilage.
