Bacterial wilt is a complex of diseases that affect a wide range of plants, including cucurbits (cucumbers, melons, squash), solanaceous vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants), and potatoes. It is caused by several different bacteria, most commonly Erwinia tracheiphila and Ralstonia solanacearum. The bacteria multiply in the plant's vascular system, blocking the flow of water and nutrients. This causes the plant to wilt, stunt, and eventually die.

The bacterium thrives in warm temperatures, with optimal growth occurring between 25-32°C (77-90°F). This is why the disease is more prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. High humidity levels in the air (above 80%) create a favorable environment for the bacterium to spread through droplets of water or condensation on the plant surface.
