Rust diseases are a group of fungal diseases that affect a wide variety of plants, including trees, shrubs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers. They are caused by fungi in the order Pucciniales, which includes over 7,000 different species. Rust fungi spread by spores, which are tiny reproductive particles that can be carried by wind, rain, or insects. When a spore lands on a susceptible plant, it can germinate and grow into the plant tissue, where it will feed on the plant's nutrients and reproduce.
